If you’re asking where is a romantic spot to visit on vacation, there are plenty of options. The United States of America is the home to many of them. If you want affordable things that won’t break your bank, go to San Francisco or Seattle, both cities provide stunning views in different settings.
According to Travel + Leisure readers, the most romantic place in the United States is San Francisco. This city ranked first on a list of best U.S. cities for romance, based on reader surveys about hotels, restaurants, and nightlife.
To be able to come up with its list of best cities for romance, Travel + Leisure asked readers to rate 35 major cities on their level of romance (on a scale from very romantic to not at all) and how much they enjoyed various activities there, like fine dining and shopping.
The most romantic place in the United States is a little town called Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, for my husband and I. With views of Monterey Bay and the rich history of artists and writers, it’s no wonder we love going to Carmel to reconnect with each other. If you can’t make it to Carmel, try one of these cities instead that I’ll list later in this article.

Many people ask themselves when planning a vacation, where should we go?. The best vacation spots for couples are destinations that provide a setting of romance and relaxation; there are numerous cities to choose from, depending on your personal preferences. Here are 10 of the best vacation spots for couples, listed in no particular order:
1. Maui, Hawaii
Maui has become a popular vacation spot because it offers something for everyone, and it’s one of my favorites.
Nothing says a more romantic vacation spot than Maui with its stunning views of waterfalls and mountainscapes, white sand beaches, and tropical island settings; you will feel like you’re in paradise as soon as you step off your plane at Kahului Airport.
There are many things to do while visiting Maui, but nothing says romance like horseback riding along some of Maui’s famous beaches.
One of my pro tips is traveling during shoulder season (April–June or September–November) when rates are lower and crowds are thinner.
If I visit during peak season (July–August), I always try to avoid weekends and major holidays—which can mean big crowds at attractions like Waikiki Beach. And my final protip is don’t forget your swimsuit!
2. Cancun, Mexico
Cancun is recognized around the world for its turquoise blue water and white sand beaches. It’s one of my favorite cities globally and is a significant tourist destination, attracting thousands of couples each year.
I remember spending my first anniversary with my husband in this beautiful city; it was paradise with a pinch of adventure.
The city’s natural beauty includes stunning seas, ancient Mayan culture, and great water sports and adventure. You’ll find all sorts of activities for couples; it’s not difficult to have fun here. Don’t be surprised if you discover a new favorite place as well!
3. Washington D.C.
If you’re planning a trip to D.C., it’s important to consider more than just politics and monuments, and the city is more than just the capital of the USA.
It has plenty of other features that are worth exploring—and if you’re traveling with your partner, there are even more perks that you can capitalize on, such as spending the day shopping in Georgetown or having dinner at Barcelona Wine Bar.
Beyond experiencing the culture and food, couples can enjoy tons of romantic activities, such as visiting some of Washington DC’s classic attractions like museums or monuments. Here are 10 places you should visit in Washington;

4. Niagara Falls, Ontario
You’ve heard it before: honeymoons don’t count if they don’t occur on a different continent. Niagara Falls, one of North America’s most popular vacation spots and one of its most scenic ones, as well.
It’s the ‘Daffodils Capital’ of North America, and since Canada’s side is equally stunning, there’s no reason not to make a weekend out of your romantic getaway. Pack up your bags; you have a lot to explore.
5. Lake Tahoe, Nevada/California
Lake Tahoe is one of those places that’s just perfect. With endless hours of sunlight, beautiful landscapes, and hiking trails, Lake Tahoe is a great vacation spot for couples looking to unwind and enjoy each other’s company.
It’s the largest body of freshwater in the Sierra Nevada Mountain, and it borders the two beautiful states of California and Nevada.
The lake is surrounded by lovely restaurants, charming towns, and casinos that you can go to when you need a break from nature.
If, like me, you prefer to stay close to nature, Lake Tahoe has plenty of that as well! The magical experience of Lake Tahoe in all seasons is one phenomenon one has to experience at the very least once in his or her lifetime.
Lake Tahoe is mesmerizing, from the beautiful greenery during the summer to the snowy pines during the winter. Here are 5 things you should do while in Lake Tahoe;
-Ride the heavenly gondola ride
-Standup paddleboarding,
-Get a new perspective with parasailing,
-Check out the Tahoe rim trail,
-Don’t forget skiing and snowboarding.
6. Asheville, North Carolina
One of our favorite vacation spots, Asheville is one of those spots that feel small and intimate even though it’s big enough to feel like a city.
The food scene is great, there are tons of hiking trails nearby, and if you stay downtown or close to downtown, you’re only a short drive from some beautiful waterfalls. It also doesn’t hurt that Asheville has a pretty decent music scene as well.
Also, if you can swing it, I highly recommend renting an Airbnb on a farm outside of town—the scenery alone will make your trip worthwhile! We’ve been here three times now and never want to leave. And, oh yeah: there are plenty of places for couples to go out and enjoy themselves without getting into trouble 😉
7. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Whether you’re after a relaxing island getaway or a more active holiday, Punta Cana has it all. The Dominican Republic offers something to travelers, including nature lovers, history buffs, and beach bums. Best of all, most of these accommodations are affordable—especially when you book in advance.
Topping most lists as one of America’s top romantic getaways is Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, one of the longest white sand beaches in the Caribbean region and one of the most luxurious golfer’s destinations.
8. Martha’s Vineyard
Located in Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard boasts picturesque beaches that you and your significant other can relax on. With horseback riding, biking trails, and a world-class golf course nearby, you’ll never run out of fun things to do.
To top it off, there are many romantic bed-and-breakfasts so you can stay overnight! This is one trip that will leave a lasting impression on your relationship! While in Martha’s vineyard, don’t forget to visit the historic Edgartown Lighthouse; it’s a beautiful sight!
9. San Francisco, California
San Francisco is one of those romantic getaways in North America. It has fantastic nightlife and plenty of romantic venues to choose from! There’s plenty to do during the daytime, with lots of shops and historic sites.
In San Francisco, you can shop at Union Square, visit Fisherman’s Wharf, climb up Coit Tower, or hop on a bus or cable car.
Touring the “Bay City” isn’t complete if you don’t take a walk across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge at sunset or have high tea during the weekend at Fairmount San Francisco.
10. New York City – New York
Many people might not consider a trip to one of America’s most visited cities as romantic, but that’s not the case for me. In fact, with Broadway shows and museums to visit during daytime hours and nightlife until 5 AM, there’s no excuse not to find romance in NYC.
There are plenty of romantic getaways for summer in New York City, from its famous Central Park to world-class restaurants. If you want unique romantic getaways in North America, consider a trip to NYC. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget!
Visit the Empire State Building, take a romantic ride on a rowboat on central park lake, enjoy breakfast in SoHo’s Balthazar, dine at Grenouille, or visit the romantic Greenwich Village for a taste of artistic paradise.
